College Horizons

College Horizons is the recipient of the 2019 Jennifer Riordan Educate2Elevate grant. The $50,000 grant will support College Horizons’ Bernalillo Public School’s Student Success Project, which provides culturally responsive college and career readiness initiatives for 6th – 8th grade Native American students, including parent engagement, after school programs in career/college exploration, community building and leadership institutes for 8th graders and a summer jump-start program for all 8th graders (Native and non-Native) transitioning to Bernalillo High School.

Explora

A second middle school education grant was awarded to support Explora’s Mentors Matter program, a partnership with NACA and Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute. Mentors Matter will connect 12-15 middle school students from NACA each semester with 5-8 Native mentors on STEM career pathways at SIPI. In turn, NACA students will serve as near-peer mentors for 75-100 Title I elementary students during Explora Science Events at the culmination of each semester. The collaboration addresses the scarcity of Native Americans in high-paying, quickly-growing STEM fields.
